Hysteroscopy : Back to Basics

Hysteroscopy is a very useful procedure that is commonly used to diagnose and even treat intrauterine pathologies. Amongst the many indications for this procedure include assessment of the endometrial cavity for polyps or submucosal fibroids (causing abnormal uterine bleeding), adhesions (causing fertility problems), and even for retained IUCD removal. Whilst the purpose for the procedure may vary patient-to-patient, the approach to performing diagnostic hysteroscopy remains generally the same. The following video aims to show the basic techniques of performing hysteroscopy, with some tips/guides as well.

Whilst the video aims to teach the method of performing hysteroscopy, theoretical knowledge is of crucial importance as well in order to perform hysteroscopy safely, something that we implore young trainees to find out by perusing available guidelines online the procedure. Do remember, preoperative preparation of a patient is just as important as the procedure itself in order to minimise any possible risk and development of complications.
