Addressing Maternal Health in Sarawak: Training for Obstetric Emergencies
Maternal morbidity and mortality remain critical global concerns. While significant strides have been made to improve pregnancy safety, more work is needed to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3. In Sarawak, where geographical barriers and limited healthcare access in rural and remote areas pose challenges, there is a pressing need for programs that equip medical professionals with the skills to manage obstetric emergencies effectively.
About SALSO
Founded in 2004 by a group of dedicated doctors, the Sarawak Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (SALSO) program aims to improve maternal health outcomes by training healthcare professionals in managing obstetric emergencies. Over the years, the course content has been regularly updated to align with the latest medical guidelines and standards, ensuring participants receive the most current, evidence-based training.
What We Offer
Our SALSO courses, typically held four times a year in Kuching and other cities across Sarawak, are designed to provide hands-on, practical training for healthcare workers in both urban and remote areas. Each two-day course covers critical maternal and fetal emergencies, including:
- Maternal Emergencies: Obstetric hemorrhage, preeclampsia, maternal sepsis, and maternal collapse
- Fetal Emergencies: Shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse, and vaginal breech delivery
Training includes high-fidelity mannequin simulations, case-based scenarios, and team-based emergency drills, all aimed at enhancing participants’ ability to respond effectively in life-threatening situations.

Who Can Join
While our primary focus is on healthcare professionals from government hospitals and clinics, we also welcome those from the private sector. Whether you are based in Kuching or a more remote area of Sarawak, our courses are open to anyone looking to improve their skills in obstetric emergency care.
