The Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit of O&G SGH is the only unit offering this subspeciality services to the entire state of Sarawak. As such we receive many referrals from all over Sarawak, from government and private clinics and hospitals alike.

As the name suggests, there are two components to this unit – the fetal and the maternal.

For the fetal component – apart from the routine mid-trimester detailed scans performing for patients with risk factors, we also carry out other surveillance and screening (such as cervical surveillance, first trimester screening, placenta accreta spectrum screening, etc) for at risk pregnancies. Our unit also provides diagnostic and therapeutic services such as amniocentesis, chorionic villi sampling, fetoscopic laser surgery and radiofrequency ablation.

For the maternal component – pregnancies may be complicated by maternal diseases or conditions that would require urgent intervention or optimization and monitoring to ensure a safe pregnancy experience for the patient. Our unit manages these cases and if needed, engages with other disciplines so that the patient receives the best possible care.

Whenever needed, multidisciplinary meetings are held to manage pregnancies complicated by fetal and/or maternal factors.

The MFM Unit also runs courses on basic and advanced ultrasound in obstetrics periodically throughout the year, besides running a credentialing program for Level 1 ultrasound certification for doctors from the government healthcare services in Kuching (including maternal and child health clinics).

Quote of the week

“To study the phenomena of disease without books is to sail an uncharted sea, while to study books without patients is not to go to sea at all.”
