A Natural Start for a Healthier Future

At Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), we are proud to be a Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI)-accredited hospital. This important initiative, led by UNICEF and WHO, promotes breastfeeding as a fundamental step toward ensuring the health and well-being of babies around the world. Breastfeeding is not only natural but an essential part of nurturing a healthy and happy beginning for both mothers and babies.
Here at SGH, we support national guidelines that recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby’s life, continuing with the introduction of complementary foods up until a child reaches at least two years of age. We are committed to this by implementing the 10+4 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, ensuring our staff are well-trained, and providing education and guidance to every mother during antenatal and postnatal care.
Why Choose Breastmilk?
Breast milk is a natural gift made by your body, perfectly tailored to meet your baby’s needs from birth onward. It is organic, free from preservatives, and changes as your baby grows, adapting to provide the right balance of nutrients at each stage of development.
Breast milk contains antibodies, especially in colostrum (the early milk), which helps protect your baby from infections and illnesses. With its unique composition, breast milk supports your baby’s health while promoting strong emotional bonds between mother and child.
The Amazing Benefits of Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is a wonderful experience that offers countless advantages for both mother and baby:
For Your Baby:
- Provides all the essential nutrition your baby needs for healthy growth.
- Strengthens immunity, protecting babies from infections and diseases.
- Reduces the risk of health issues later in life, such as diabetes, asthma, and obesity.
For You, the Mother:
- Encourages emotional bonding and connection through shared feeding moments.
- Releases oxytocin, a hormone that supports uterine contractions and reduces postpartum bleeding.
- Lowers the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers.
- Supports postpartum weight loss.
- Simplifies feeding during outings or trips—no need for bottles or extra supplies.
Breastfeeding is truly a natural, convenient, and enriching choice for mothers and their little ones.
Can All Mothers Breastfeed Their Babies?
The good news is that most mothers can breastfeed, regardless of the shape or size of their breasts or nipples. However, some special circumstances might affect a mother’s ability to breastfeed. These include:
- Mothers with certain contagious illnesses like herpes simplex affecting the breasts.
- Those undergoing chemotherapy or taking certain medications.
- Mothers with a history of breast surgery or radiation therapy.
If you have concerns about breastfeeding due to health conditions, don’t worry. SGH’s trained healthcare professionals will work with you to find the best feeding plan and support you every step of the way.
What to Expect During Your Stay at SGH
At SGH, we prioritize breastfeeding from the very start of your journey:
- Education & Support: You’ll receive helpful information on breastfeeding and guidance to build your confidence from your first moments as a new mother.
- Immediate Bonding: After delivery, your baby will be placed on your bare chest for skin-to-skin contact for at least one hour. This promotes a smooth transition for your baby and encourages the first feed.
- Rooming In: Your baby will stay by your side at all times in the maternity ward (in a baby cot) so you can learn your baby’s cues and respond to their needs by breastfeeding on demand.
- Support When You Need It: Whether you’re a first-time mother or recovering from a cesarean delivery, SGH nurses are always ready to assist, support, and guide you.
Need Help with Breastfeeding? You’re Not Alone
Sometimes, breastfeeding can come with challenges—and that’s okay! You have access to a range of resources to help you succeed:
- Klinik Kesihatan Ibu & Anak (KKIA): Your nearest clinic has trained nurses who can provide breastfeeding advice and assistance.
- Support Groups: SGH provides access to local support groups, including Kumpulan Sokongan Susu Ibu Sarawak (KUSSIS), a compassionate group that offers advice, support, and even home visits. They can be contacted via telephone or social media (Facebook).
Remember, breastfeeding is a journey—and you are not alone. There are professionals and support groups ready to stand with you every step of the way.
A Joyful and Rewarding Experience
Breastfeeding is more than just a way to nourish your baby—it’s a special time for connection, bonding, and shared love. It benefits both mother and child, creating a foundation for health and happiness that lasts a lifetime.
At Sarawak General Hospital, we’re here to support you, cheer you on, and celebrate this beautiful stage of motherhood with you. Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, we’re here to ensure your breastfeeding journey is as smooth and joyful as possible.
You’ve got this, and we’ve got your back. 💛
